My latest knitting project is a beanie hat for a newborn. Of course, I'm not too patient of a person and always thought that checking the gauge was a waste of time. Until I tried to knit the beanie hat. Because when you knit a hat for a newborn without checking your gauge, you end up with a hat for a 5 year old!
Luckily The Mermaid LOVES her new hat, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I tried again, and after checking my gauge and going down two needle sizes, I ended up with a beanie hat that will actually fit a baby:

I too am impatient to start a project and usually don't bother making a swatch. I've gotten lucky so far but I know my luck will run out, eventually. The only project I ever made that I made swatches for was my carseat baby blanket, and that was because the pattern was a worksheet based on your swatches!
I'm still plugging away on my "Country Cousins" baby blanket squares. Oh, and still knitting little baby hats for charity in between projects. I'm up to six with just the cotton I had leftover from another project. :)
Love the hats! I need to learn to knit better- I can only do scarfs and washrags- nothing fancy just square or rectangle :) But I love doing it!

She's now telling me she doesn't like fish, but I love the project so much I don't really care. Maybe I'll just try to wear it myself if she won't - hats are stretchy and preschoolers have surprisingly large heads. ;)
