Music Review: Corneille

I really love music. I listen to it every day, mostly while I am cleaning. So I was really excited to be able to get my hands on the new Corneille CD, The Birth of Cornelius.

What can I say? This artist is amazing. His songs are full of soul and meaning. And it isn't just his talent that is amazing: his back story is as well. Corneille was living in Rwanda in 1994 and lost his entire family in the genocide. His strength and determination is truly inspiring.

Most of his songs are about love and soul, but there were at least two songs about Rwanda on this CD that nearly brought me to tears.

I love this CD and have already lent it out to family and friends. It's definitely a winner. And, I have two copies to give away to two lucky winners. All you have to do to enter is:

1. Head on over to Amazon and scroll down to listen to some samples from the CD.

2. Come back and comment, letting me know which sample you liked best.

3. If you subscribe to my blog, let me know and you will get an extra entry.
4. Also, extra entries will be given to anyone who tweets, blogs, or facebooks this giveaway.

Make sure you let me know if you've done each in a separate comment! I will choose two winners on Monday, April 13th. Good luck!

Spring is Here!

I haven't had internet access all week, so sorry to leave everyone hanging. The Guppy is fine, her gums just ended up being bruised. You can hardly tell anything happened.

Meanwhile, we've been enjoying the warmer weather that has come up. So, my favorite things about Spring...

A snow-free yard with lots of grass :o)

A snow-free deck to lounge and entertain on :o)

A new swing set for the girls :o)

Children that are happy to be outdoors in the sunshine :o)
And, finally....turning the heat to the "off" switch :o)

And here's a pic of the girls, just because they are so cute :o)
So, here's what I've got coming up: two great reviews, including a giveaway, and more of my random thoughts :o)

She'll Make My Hair Turn Gray

Yesterday I was at a meeting when I got a frantic phone call from the Knight. All I could hear was the Guppy screaming in the background and I could only make out a few words that the Knight was saying:

"lots of blood....really hurt.....mouth...."

Turns out the girls were playing and the Guppy fell and the Mermaid tripped and fell on the Guppy's head, basically slamming her mouth into the ground. The bleeding had stopped by the time I got home, but now the Guppy has a huge fat upper lip. Oh, and the gums above her top two teeth are black.

The fat lip doesn't worry me. The gums do. I've called the dentist and made an appointment but they won't see her until Monday because they want the swelling to do down first. Her teeth are in their normal position and she doesn't appear to be in any pain and I'm waiting for her pediatrician to call me back.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Any tips for reducing the swelling? The nurse at the ped's office told me ice, but honestly I don't know how well I am going to get a two year old to keep ice on her lip. Inputs, please :o)

Tackle It Tuesday: Knitting Project

When it comes to knitting projects, I find I have a hard time actually finishing the products I start.

I love knitting, but I get bored with what I'm making real quickly and so it will sit on my needles for months.

Not so this time.
For Tackle It Tuesday this week, I am going to resolve to work a little bit on my knitting project every day, even if it is only ten minutes of knitting. The project I am currently working on is a sweater for the Mermaid. I've almost finished knitting the front piece, and thanks to this week's Tackle It Tuesday, I will finish and start the back piece!

I'll post pictures of the finished product when I'm done.

This morning around 4 AM the Mermaid woke up vomiting and has been sick ever since.

I nailed the right homeopathic remedy on the first try, yay! But then she had a relapse so we are still waiting.

It's going to be a looonnggg day.

Product Review: Baby Einstein World Music DVD

Thanks to Mom Central, I was recently given the opportunity to review Baby Einstein's new DVD, Baby Einstein World Music.

Both the Mermaid and the Guppy loved dancing and jiving to the music played on the DVD. The girls were introduced to music from all over the world, including Ireland, Africa, Japan, and more!

There were a few things about this great DVD that I especially enjoyed: not only did the girls learn about different styles of music, but about different cultures as well. Also, the DVD has amazing options where I can tailor the movie to each child's different levels and needs. For the Mermaid, I can choose the Grow With Me option, which puts additional emphasis on language. Or, for the Guppy, I can switch to Select-A-Segment and choose a shorter segment for easy transition into nap time, or for just enough viewing time to keep her busy while I cook dinner.

Right now my girls are dancing and clapping away. Right now you should head over to the Baby Einstein website to find out more information about this great DVD, including a preview!

Milk Bank: Donating Breast Milk to Save Babies

I came across this article when a friend shared it through Facebook.

This article tells the story of a woman's courageous act to help save babies by donating her breast milk.

At eight pages, it's a long article, but it is definitely worth the read. I laughed, I cried, I was inspired.

From the article:
Even when Lynn Page felt she'd lost everything, she still had something
invaluable to give. Bonnie Rochman tells the story of a mother's devotion and
the little-known network of medical miracle workers that's quietly helping the
babies who need help most.

Breastfeeding Cuts Heart Attack Risk

From the article:
Mothers who breastfeed could slash their risk of a heart attack by more
than a third - if they do it for a total of two years or more.

Very cool.

Back to School

Last week the Mermaid kept asking me if we could start Learning Time again. So, on Monday we started her new curriculum, and the Guppy is joining in on the fun too!!
We started a basic Letter of the Week curriculum geared to learning how to read. She practiced her handwriting...

We also studied the composer Anderson, Astronauts, and Antelopes to get in a little social studies and science as well. The Mermaid was very excited to make her first lapbook, all about the letter A!

Then the Mermaid surprised me by asking me specifically to teach her how to add. So, I broke out a math workbook I had bought a while ago and let her have at it!

She loved learning how to add!!
Another great thing that happened to us is that we joined a homeschooling group specifically for girls. The group is filled with girls that are around the Mermaid's and the Guppy's age and so far they are having a blast!! It is loosely going to be associated with the Girl Scouts, so the girls will base their learning activities around badges that they want to earn. Today, the girls earned their puppet-making badges by making puppets ( a yarn puppet and a paper bag puppet):

Next week the girls will bring their puppets to the group meeting and the group will put on a puppet show!! I love the dynamics of this group, and I really love that this group's age range allows the Guppy to participate, instead of having to just be a tagalong :o)

Bits and Pieces...

Yesterday I took the Mermaid to the dentist and she behaved really well and was so proud of her shiny clean teeth!

Yesterday I also took the girls to visit some friends and I was able to sit around and laugh for a few hours. It was nice. The best part? They are coming over our house today to visit again!

This morning:

"Mermaid, if you want your friends to come over to play then you should pick up your room and clean it."
"Why do I have to do it when we can just get a robot to do it for me?"
Why indeed.....

The Knight's birthday is coming up this weekend and I am so excited with the gift I am going to surprise him with. In the meantime, I'm going to have to tell you all about the new updates over at Bella Sara, and how the Mermaid loves taking care of her horses!

Walking The Fine Line

I'm slowly starting to get my feet back under me again.

I'm afraid to sit around and do nothing; then I start to think too much about things. So, I try to keep myself busy, without walking over that fine line where I am overdoing it and keeping myself from fully healing.

My friends and family have been so supportive and I am eternally grateful for that.

At times I start to get this empty feeling inside. A void so deep it feels like nothing can fill it. Without fail, each time this has happened, both girls have run up to me and given me hugs and kisses and told me they loved me.

How do they know?

They remind me how full my heart is. And I'm able to smile again...at least for a little while.

RI moms get right to breast-feed in public -

RI moms get right to breast-feed in public - Boston.com Go RI!!!

Rhode Island is now one of 41 states to have passed laws affirming a
mother's right to breast-feed in public, according to the National Conference of
State Legislatures. Nearly all the laws have been enacted since the
mid-1990s.

"There is a trend toward more acceptance of breast-feeding," said Dr.
Sandra Musial, a pediatrician who supported the legislation and co-founded the
Physicians' Committee for Breastfeeding in Rhode Island. "It's becoming more
mainstream."
