Yard Sale Finds

This weekend the Knight and I went "yardsaleing" with $10 in our pocket. This is what we got with that $10:

Two board games (Taboo and Scene It?), an etch-a-sketch, a mickey mouse doll, a ladybug costume for the girls' dress up bin, 1 dress for The Guppy, 4 shirts for The Guppy, and 1 pair of overalls and 1 vest for the Mermaid. We also got a weed wacker(!) and a Dan Brown book (not pictured).

Not bad for $10!

Did you go "yard saleing" this weekend? Let me know what awesome deals you found!

On The Fridge

Have you ever noticed how much a refrigerator can tell you about a family?

If the kitchen is the center of the home, then the refrigerator is the heart.

Not only because of what is in the inside (food that nourishes us), but for what is on the outside.

A busy family might have calendars, lists of things to do, etc. on their fridge. A family falling on hard times might have less inside their fridge than a family who is prospering. A family who is grieving might have nothing on their fridge, save for a lone obituary, clipped from the newspaper.

Don't ask me why I think of these things, I just do.

When Kalei died, our fridge told conflicting stories. The outside was bare, telling of our grief and inability to sit down and color happy picture with our children to hang on the fridge. However, the inside was stuffed full of food, meals brought over from loving friends and family, reminding us how lucky and supported we were.

Today our fridge is full, on the inside and out. We are nourished and happy from its insides. The front of the outside is covered with happy artwork, the sides covered with invitations, cards, lists, etc. There's not an inch to spare for sorrow and grief.

I hope it stays that way for a long time.

What's on your fridge? If you feel like posting a picture, leave a comment and link to your post.

Because Kids Don't Come With Instructions...

Any new mother out there reaches a point where they questions....questions about what to do in certain situations, questions about their own style of parenting, etc. I've found that there is no greater resource for a new mom than a mom who has been there, done that. Other mothers can offer great advice for whatever situation arises where you are unsure on the best course of action to take.

I believe that's why mother's groups are thriving all around the country; not only so moms can get out with their kids and interact with adults, but because mothers have learned to offer guidance and suggestions to one another.

However, for those times where another mother isn't available in person, MomCentral gave me the heads up on Mamapedia.

Mamapedia is a great source of information where you can ask questions and get answers from moms who have experience. From the website:
Mamapedia is your lifeline to millions of moms who’ve shared their real-world wisdom through local Mamasource online communities over the past two years. We compiled their answers, organized them by stage, and made them instantly searchable. We invite you to bookmark Mamapedia to find answers in a pinch, and to join your local Mamasource community so you can share what you’ve learned on your journey. And don't miss Mamapedia’s ever-expanding range of topics, including household, money, health, relationships, and many other things that moms are talking about.

Question about your teething baby? Want to know how to treat a diaper rash? Any question for any age, Mamapedia has the answer.

Flip Flops Bring Us Joy

I haven't yet experienced the fun things that come with having a boy, but I am really having a great time with my girls!

Girl clothes are cute. And fun. And the pink bows and ribbons? To die for. I love braiding my girls' hair, or putting it in pigtails. And giving each other "fake" manicures and pedicures (I say fake because I can't bring myself yet to actually put nail polish on their innocent hands and feet...yet).

My girls have a knack for bargain shopping already, mostly because they learned from me, and I will not likely buy anything unless it's on sale.
I'm not a shoe girl, but I want to be. My favorite shoe is the flip flop. It's cooling, cute, flexible, and I kind of like the sound it makes when you walk. Adorable. Old Navy had their flip flops on sale on Saturday for $1 each, so I got up early and headed out to pick some up for me and my girls. I got three pairs for myself: one pink, one black, one white. For the girls, I picked up white ones with purple and butterflies on them. They were so excited to have their first pair of flip flops!

I hope as my girls grow that they will continue to enjoy bargain shopping with me. That little things, like getting a bargain on flip flops, will still bring them joy. A lot of children lose that innocent joy when they grow up; I tend to have mine still, and hope the same will go for them.

She is My Heart and Soul

At 2.5 years, the Guppy is down to nursing four times a day (when she wakes up in the morning, at nap time, when she wakes up from her nap, and at bedtime). Most of the time these are short nursing sessions, but once in a while, like today, it will turn into a long session.

I was downstairs working on the computer and the girls were napping. Suddenly, The Guppy woke up with that cry, the one that every mother knows and instantly responds to, the one that makes your heart skip a beat and and your body go numb. Turns out she had a nightmare, and was too upset and crying too hard to say anything except to ask to nurse.

So we cuddled on the couch to nurse, and as her breathing slowed and her tears trickled away, my heart returned to normal and the adrenaline began to leave my body. I studied her face, kissing the beauty mark on her cheek and admiring her eyelashes, which are so long they seem to kiss her cheeks every time she blinks.

Why are people so eager to put pressure on kids to grow up? It begins at birth, with wanting to know if the baby sleeps through the night...then when the baby is going to roll/crawl/walk/talk...then when the toddler is going to potty train....when is the baby going to wean?

The Guppy needs me to be there for her, and that's fine with me. I need her just as much. She holds my heart and soul in her hands.

Ok, Now This Is Getting Ridiculous...

Extremely ridiculous.

From the article:

New mothers and staff have criticised Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust for putting up the image on the children's ward at Rochdale Infirmary.
The poster shows a child of two or three breastfeeding a doll under the headline
'It's normal' and accompanied by the caption 'Children copy their mothers,
teenagers do it! Celebrities do it'.

Health chiefs insist that the poster is designed to promote breastfeeding but critics say that the picture is 'distasteful, inappropriate and crude'.

Okay, people? Seriously. It is a picture of a child nursing her doll. DEAL!

Such a shame that people are so upset over something so sweet. Really, there are no words for this level of foolishness.

Rubbish Free Living

Imagine living a life with no rubbish?

Money Saving Mom recently gave her readers a heads up about a website run by a family who embarked on a challenge of creating no more than one bag of garbage for an entire year. They succeeded.

What I love about their website is that not only does it show that treading lightly is certainly possible, but it shows how. Their website includes a rubbish-free guide and a blog filled with tips and hints.

I'm thinking of coming up with a challenge for our own family.

Take Me Away....

Because the Knight and I are on Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover, vacations are suspended in our house at the moment. However, one of the things that we like to talk about while snuggling is the great vacations we will take once our debt is paid off.

Kissimmee seems like a great place to vacation. They have a great website that is very interactive and is full of information on everything you can find at Kissimmee. The Knight and I were looking at the website last night and talking about what things we would do if we vacationed there. We agreed the girls would love to go to SeaWorld Orlando, not to mention the other great Theme Parks in the area. And they also have a lot of great theme festivals and events, like the Epcot International Flower And Garden Festival. Let's not forget all the great beaches and parks to visit, too.

One of the things we like about Kissimmee is that it is so family-friendly. That's really important to us, because we believe in taking our children with us on vacations (we even took the Mermaid with us on our honeymoon!). So I'm glad that Kissimmee, Florida has so many things to do for families (think of not only the great theme parks, but the outdoor adventures like airboat rides!)

Kissimmee is sponsoring this post because they want to get the word out about their amazing Freedom To Enjoy Sweepstakes. I'm really excited about this sweepstakes because it is a chance for us to get a great vacation without upsetting our debt snowball. Kissimmee is giving away 3 weekend getaways (3 days/2 nights) for two, for those who want a romantic getaway with their loved one. For those who want a truly fantastic family getaway, they are also giving away two week-long vacations for four! Just go to their website to enter for your chance to win!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we win. Because getting away with my family for a week? That's not just a vacation...that's paradise.

Honoring The Real Woman's Body

Since I have stopped watching cable television, one thing I realized that I definitely don't miss is the ads that show perfect women with their perfect bodies that are perfectly made up and put together in their perfect clean homes.

Today's women are bombarded by ads on two levels: first, if your family isn't happy and joyful at all moments of the day, and if your house isn't perfectly clean and bright and sunny, then you are doing something wrong and you should not be happy until you buy their product.

The second message is, if you don't have a perfect body and if you don't wake up every day and put on a nice outfit and makeup and have perfect hair, then you are doing something wrong and you will only be happy when you buy their product.

I'm not talking about the ads that show young girls in size 4 walking on the beach in bikinis (although that certainly adds to the problem). I'm talking about moms on TV who are holding a 6 week old baby but are lacking the 6 week postpartum body. The message is: once you pop out your baby you should be able to squeeze right back into your size 4 pre-pregnancy jeans. No muffin-tops or postpartum bellies allowed, please!

Let's talk about real life: about wearing maternity jeans after pregnancy for a bit; about being so busy taking care of a newborn that you forget to shower for a day or two, never mind do your hair and makeup; about how pregnancy and giving birth is going to change your body. Even if you are a size 4 starting out and you are a size 4 after you give birth, there is still going to be changes. If it isn't weight gain it is stretch marks, or you might weigh the same but the weight sits differently on you now. It's going to be different and that's okay because that's real, that's life, and those changes are our badges of honor for bringing a new life into this world.

Women should be proud of their bodies, their stretch marks. I think this would be the case, except we are bombarded by these ads that cause us to place unrealistic expectations on ourselves, and I think a lot of women are ashamed of their bodies and keep it hidden away as much as possible, when in fact it should be viewed as honorable and part of the essence of motherhood.

I can't be the only one who feels this way, can I?

Some links that I've read this week around this topic:

Midwives Honor The Sensuality of Pregnancy and Birth.
From the article:
The media reflects a lot of image confusion, resulting in pregnant women diminishing their desire to look pregnant. The social image of adopting a lean, masculine-looking body has influenced some pregnant women to try not to have any excess adipose tissue on them after birth. Our lean culture has pregnant women joining the obsession of calorie restriction and adopting eating disorders. This phenomenon has become so common that it must be screened for routinely during the prenatal health history. Superstars and models brag to the media about how much they exercise and the expertise of their personal trainers, who helped them reach their size two by their tenth postpartum day.

House Fairy wrote an awesome post that you must read on this entitled "Emerging From Underneath The Mountain of Capitalism's Misinformation"
From her post:

No wonder the tweens/teens gobble up the tabloids. They tell such a crisp and clean and linear and beginning-middle-end kind of a story, huh? Meet a hot dude, have an obnoxious wedding (or not, usually not) have a be-bop pregnancy with a tiny rounded shiny (what is that one about, btw?) tanning boothed belly--twins are hot right now, maybe try for twins--, and have a very mysterious birth with no details, prattle on about how you breastfeed and then appear on such and such red carpet such and such weeks afterwards with no baby in sight and unveil your new bod!The end!

And finally, if you haven't yet, please go visit The Shape of a Mother to see what real women look like.

It's one thing to diet and work to be thinner for health reasons, but to do it just to fit into our society's expectations on what women ought to look like? Something isn't right...

Our Stroller is Covered In Dust

In case you didn't know this by now, I love babywearing.

Our stroller is in the basement, covered in a fine layer of dust. And while we do have a wagon and a double stroller that I borrowed from a friend for those trips to the zoo and fairs, my preferred method of transporting my children is still in a sling or wrap or mai tei, on my back, front, side, whatever. Even at 2 1/2, the Guppy still loves to go on my back.

Even though babywearing is becoming more "popular", I still get the occasional odd look or comment when I'm out and about (less so now then before, but it still happens). So, when So Fawned gave her readers a heads up about this beautiful slide show, I couldn't help but share it with my readers.

So, sit back and enjoy this beautiful slide show of babywearing in indigenous cultures. I love the different varieties of carriers, and the beautiful and vibrant colors!

Weekly Deals

My regular grocery bill this week at the Super Walmart was only $52. I also got some great deals at CVS and local grocery stores.

First, my CVS deals:

This week I had $23 in ECB's left over from last week to use. CVS was having a sale on Kashi cereal, 2/$5, and on Orville Popcorn, 2/$5. If you bought $10 worth of popcorn, you got $5 in ECB's. They also had Dry Idea deodorant on sale 2/$5 with a $2 ECB reward, and a $2 ECB reward if you bought Colgate Enamel Protect for $3.99.
Transaction:
4 boxes of Kashi cereal at $2.50 each
4 boxes of Orville popcorn at $2.50 each
2 Dry Idea deodorant at $2.50 each
1 Colgate Enamel Protect at $3.99

Used 1 $5/$30 purchase that printed out for me at the machine
Used 2 $1.50/2 boxes of Kashi Cereal printable coupon
Used 2 $1/2 boxes of Orville popcorn from today's coupon insert
Used 2 $2/1 Dry Idea printable coupon
Used $16 in ECB's from last week (leaving me with $7 in ECB's from last week)
Total value: $30
Total OOP: $0.00
Total ECB's received: $9 (leaving me with $16 total to use next week).

I'm mostly excited about the Kashi cereal because we LOVE Kashi products in our home but don't buy it often because they can be pricey.

I did okay on grocery stores this week:

My biggest deal was the Wheat Thins. Big Y had double coupons in their flyer this week, and the Wheat Thins were on sale 2/$6. I just happened to have 5 $1 off Wheat Thin coupons, which were all doubled, so I got each box for $0.99.
The sliced cheese was on sale for 2/$3, the Romaine Hearts for 2/$5, the Near East couscous and rice 10/$10, the tuna for $0.88 each, and the grapes for $0.98/lb. They also had Philadelphia cream cheese bricks on sale for $0.99 each, and I had 3 $1/2 printable coupons, so I got them for $0.49 each.

Total value for the week: $156.13
Total spent OOP: $75.07

Breastfeeding In The News

Market Watch has a great article about the obstacles mom face while pumping at work, and why a lot of women give it up. As someone who pumped through college and at work, I have faced many of the obstacles the article describes. It's a shame that most businesses don't realize the value for them of having their employees breastfeed their children (children get sick less and therefore employee has to miss less days). From the article:
Despite the entreaties to breastfeed, few employers go out of their way to help women continue to do so. One in four companies offered an on-site mother's room last year, and 6% had lactation support services, according to the Society for
Human Resource Management. Fifteen percent had paid maternity leave beyond what short-term disability covers, and only 6% of companies had on-site child care.

Great Britain adopts the World Health Organization growth charts for babies, which are based on the rate of growth of breastfed babies. From the article:
Cole added: “The way breastfed babies grow will now become the norm. With the previous charts a breastfed baby could be growing perfectly normally but would appear to the health visitor not to be growing as fast as the charts recommended, so there might have been pressure to wean early [on to solid foods or formula milk].
“Thin babies will [now] not appear to be so thin and fat babies will appear to be more fat. The fat babies are likely to be formula fed, growing very fast and developing problems with obesity.”

Finally, another great article on why so many women stop breastfeeding when their maternity leave ends. From the article:
According to a joint study by the National Women’s Health Resource Center and Medela breast pump company, 32% of mothers in the U.S. stop breastfeeding 7 weeks after returning to work. If 4.1 million babies are born in the U.S.
annually, and 25% of mothers return to work post-birth, (both stats from the
U.S. Census Bureau), some 328,000 babies per year are being switched to formula
at 5 months even though their mothers are capable of breastfeeding.

Walking For Health, Walking For Her

Once in a while, when I am particularly down and in need of some love and support, I catch a whiff of my grandmother’s perfume.

My grandmother passed away right before Christmas in 2004 after a long battle with many types of cancer, breast cancer included.

My grandmother did a lot to hold our family together. She was a funny, loving, and generous person who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. When she passed, a lot of our family traditions left with her; it was then we realized how important these traditions, and family in general, was to her.

I’m sure everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by breast cancer. We call them mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and daughters. We call them heroes and survivors, and sometimes they are called angels.

For the past two months, I have been walking with my mother to get in shape. Often, while we are walking, we remember my grandmother and tell fond memories that she gave us. These walks are very special to me, and great for my physical health. Now, these walks can mean even more.

BeeWell Miles is sponsoring this post because they believe they can make a difference and want to get the word out. If you are walking or running to get in shape, join BeeWell Miles and log the miles that you walk or run each day. For every mile logged, BeeWell Miles will donate $0.15 for the Breast Cancer Network of Strength, an organization that helps emotionally support women like my Grandmother, who did not have enough time to wait for a cure.

I’ve already joined (it’s FREE) and I am amazed at everything BeeWell Miles offers. Not only can you log your meals and miles, but they have a great Nutrition and Activity balancing tool, and article series on exercising by Coach Jenny, Training, the ability to map your route, and Sudoku, so you can keep your brain healthy too. Plus you can get extra support through their online community and daily sweepstakes are available for you to enter.

Let’s help BeeWell Miles reach their goal of $200,000 to donate to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength. Click here to join.

Wanted: A Green Thumb

I have bad luck with plants. When we moved into our new home, I got several house plants as gifts. I've killed them all, except two: one that I have no idea what it is but it is hanging on by some miracle, and an aloe plant.

My sister bought me the aloe plant because she knew I am cursed with plants but that I like natural remedies. She told me it would be hard to kill, even for me. I love aloe plants, so I was very careful in taking care of it. It started to die, so I gave up.

I have such a brown thumb, that once I stopped taking the aloe plant, it got better!!

I'm so excited that this year I have a yard. And a beautiful garden that we "inherited" from the previous owners. Except I have no idea how to care for a garden. And I am terrified that I'm going to kill every beautiful plant out there.

I went through on Mother's Day and pulled the obvious weeds out (even I know what a dandelion is) but there are some things I'm not sure about. A few of the plants are blossoming beautifully and I'd like to know their names. A few look like they are dead and I want to replace them, but I don't know if they are really dead or if they are just late bloomers.
So, to start: here was some of the plants blooming in the front of our house. Does anyone out there know what these plants are?

My goal this year is to be able to take care of the existing garden. If all goes well, then next year I will plant a vegetable/herb garden.

If anyone wants to share their favorite gardening resource as well, that would be fabulous!

Making Room

I've written recently about how I am working to declutter my life. I find that as I clear out my mind and thoughts, my actions, and my home, I am making room for the things that are more important to me, things that I looked forward to having more time to devote to. These things fill up the space that I am creating, and nowadays my heart is full.

There has also been some things that have filled up this space that I didn't expect. Little surprises that bring me joy and make me examine my life with a new perspective.

Because when I take some things off my plate, I have more time to sit back and relax. More time to be still.

And in this stillness, I hear a "voice". I feel a calming presence surround me. You can call it God, or spirits, or nature's energy, or whatever your faith lead you to call it. I call it lovely.

I can feel it gently tugging at me, wanting me to hear what it has to say.

I'm listening.

Each Stone Has A Story

I am not really a jewelry person. I like to wear earrings and necklaces, but I don't have that many and I never really ask for them as gifts.

However, there have been a few times where jewelry was given to me as a gift and it really meant something special to me. These are the stories of the two necklaces that I wear the most:

My first Mother's Day, the Knight bought me a necklace that I adore. Putting it on makes me remember how exciting that first Mother's Day was and also reminds me how lucky I am to be a mom. Whenever I feel it's cool beads against my skin, memories of the Mermaid as a baby come flooding back to me: the way she still had that baby smell, how tiny her little hands were, etc.

My second necklace was made for me by a friend. She made it out of shells; "A shell necklace for Shelly" she told me. She gave it to me when I was pregnant with Kalei and I wear it almost every day. While I was pregnant, it made me feel close to nature and life in general. After Kalei died, it served as a reminder of the short but blissful time I had with him.

I'm sharing these stories with you because I believe that jewelry can invoke powerful memories and emotions in people. It doesn't have to be a fany or expensive piece; even a macaroni necklace can have special meaning for a mom.

Recently I've been looking at the Jewelry Information Center website. They have a lot of information available for people who don't know much about fine jewelry, like me. You can check out their buyer's guide for information when shopping for a finer piece, research their gift guide, and even learn how to care for your jewelry. The best part is where you can share your own Jewelry Stories. In fact, if you submit your own jewelry story, you will be entered for a chance to win a Kay Jewelers 14K White Gold Journey Diamond Necklace. Just go here to submit your story.

I would love to read your favorite jewelry stories. Do you have a piece of jewelry that has special meaning to you?

Decluttering My Life

Lately I've been feeling an urge to declutter my life...take some stuff off my plate and re-examine my priorities.

When we moved into our house in November, we moved in with as little clutter as possible. Some clutter has started to build up in the girls room, but other than that, I am pretty much clutter free.

Or am I?

I've realized that clutter comes in many forms other than just "stuff" that lies around your house. Clutter can also take the form of too many responsibilities, too many emails, and too many things that take me away from time spent with my family.

Our van was broken down recently and while I did feel housebound, I also began to enjoy and appreciate a quiet day spent at home. I've found that folding laundry can be relaxing (although I still hate putting it away) and that turning the computer off and instead sitting on the deck with a cup of herbal tea and just what I need to relax.

I'm gradually pulling back from the things that I realise are cluttering up my life. I am still going to go to some groups and activities because I really enjoy them and the things they bring to my life and the girl's life. But I'm going to be choosy from now on, and I'm learning how to say "no".

This past weekend I unsubscribed from 50 yahoo groups and about 25 newsletters. I spent less time on the computer and spent more time coloring with my girls. I went outside and examined the garden that I "inherited" from the previous owners; it needs work but it is so beautiful.

Taking a deep breath, and sitting back has done wonders for me these past two weeks. I realise that my time is precious and important, and it is my right to be choosy on how I spend it.

In what ways have you "decluttered" your life? How did you come about realising that the "clutter" needs to go?

My Mother's Hand Me Downs

I've written about my mother before and what a great person she is. But I felt the need to tell her personally how I feel.

Dear Mom,

You gave many things to me, but the ones that stick out in my mind is: my looks; my stubbornness; my passion; my ability to stick to my instincts and decisions, even while being questioned by others; my love of horses; my sense of fun and adventure; and my sense of humour.

Most importantly, you have given me so many memories that I can cherish. Some of them of just "snatches of love", bits and pieces that I remember from every day life: like the feel of your hands in my hair when you plaited it; the way you woke me up in the morning; the way you tucked me in at night, and the way your perfume would linger in the air long after you kissed me goodnight and closed the door.

I also have very specific memories of you that I cherish. Here are just a few of my favorites:

When I was in my first horse show and my pony, Romeo, bucked me off 30 seconds after I entered the ring. I remember that of all the people that rushed into the ring, you were the first one there. I also remember how angry you were at Romeo. And mostly, I remember your gentle words and touch, encouraging me to get "back in the saddle", which I did (although on a different pony. It was a long time before you would trust Romeo again).

When I would write my short stories, and you would love them, no matter how ridiculous they were. You encouraged me to enter that short story contest, and comforted me when I didn't win (they obviously didn't know a good sci fi story when they saw one!).

When I would come home from school crying because I was made fun of, or didn't make the softball team, you would just wrap your arms around me and let me cry. Then you would convince me how stupid they were.

Later, when I was older and on a bigger horse and entered jumping competitions, I would get mad that you couldn't watch me jump. You would encourage me and cheer for me, but you could never watch the jumping classes. Now that I'm a mom, and I've seen what happens to kids who fall off and get trampled during the jumping competitions, I totally get it.

When I would overhear you bragging about me to other people, telling them excitedly about my latest accomplishments. Now that I look back, I wonder if you let me "overhear" on purpose. Either way, it did wonders for my self-esteem, so thank you.

You are a strong, beautiful woman, one of my best friends, and the best mother one could ask for. Happy Mother's Day!

Book Review: Who's Your Mama

Want to read a book about mothering that focuses on "real" mothers? Mother's who don't fall into the stereotypical big house with a white picket fence category?

Who's Your Mama: The Unsung Voices of Women and Mothers provides refreshingly raw and real accounts of women who face obstacles while in the process of becoming a mother, or in the journey of motherhood itself. Each of the stories lets the reader in on the author's most intimate beliefs, wishes, and realities as they explore motherhood while facing obstacles not described in other mothering books. Instead of focusing on the affluent married women that dominate other mothering books, Who's Your Mama lets readers relate to what the majority of women are facing today in our racially and economically diverse society. The author even includes stories of women who choose to be childless, in order for others to understand their choices and the obstacles that they face in a society that assumes all women want to give birth.

Many stories in this book made me cry and laugh, and I often found myself nodding my head in agreement. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a dose of "real" mothering in today's world. Best of all, the book is divided into short stories, which is great for mothers, as we all know its hard to find the time to sit down and read a great novel in one sitting while our children are clamoring for attention! Bring it to your child's gym class, or read it while sitting next to the tub during "bath time". I promise you, it is well worth the read!

Imagine...

Imagine living in a country where homebirth is so "normal" and accepted that it is used in ads to sell products!

This is an actual ad for a mattress that features a homebirth. Beautiful.

Old Sturbridge Village

This past weekend the Knight and I took the girls to Old Sturbridge Village. We go every year, as the Knight's company sponsors a free weekend for all its employees and family. You can read more about OSV here.

It's so nice to start a family tradition with the girls. Family traditions are important in my family, and I hope that this tradition of visiting OSV every year lives on when the girls have their own children.

As the girls get older and understand the exhibits more, it gets more fun. This year, they were excited to watch the Knight make a tin cup, they loved the potter exhibit, and the animals, of course! Here are the pictures from this year's trip:

She is My Sunshine

I can't seem to stop smelling the top of the Guppy's head today. I don't know how it's possible, but she always smells like sunshine.
Today it is raining. I find that my emotions are tied closely with the weather, so I know that it's going to be a little more of a "downer" day for me. I also know that I will be fine because of the Guppy.

This girl keeps me going no matter what. She's so laid back and compassionate and curious and easy going. I can take her anywhere, and I normally do. I honestly think she wakes up every morning and thinks, "How many people can I make laugh today?"

I remember when she was a baby, I was always sniffing the top of her head because I love that "new baby smell". It gradually began to go away, but it was replaced by a much nicer smell: the smell of sunshine. The Guppy loves it when I sing "You Are My Sunshine" to her, and whenever I smell the top of her head I am reminded of how much that is true; she is my sunshine, my beacon of light, my laughing fairy, my wishing star.

How can a child smell like sunshine? I don't know. Maybe, when He was creating the Guppy, He have her that special scent, because He knew that on a rainy day, Sunshine is something that I could not get enough of to keep me going.

I know the Guppy is waiting patiently for me to finish publishing this post. She somehow senses that on rainy days, I need extra cuddles and extra laughs. I know once I hit publish and get up from the table, she will run up to me with arms open wide, a smile lighting her face. She and I will cuddle on the couch, and bask in the sunshine.

It's going to be a good day.

Linky Love: Living Frugal

Couponing and saving money with shopping takes time and work, but it is so much easier now that I have resources to look at when I'm trying to match up coupons with sales. Here are some of my favorite links:

CouponMom: here you can match up coupons with local store deals, look up coupons that you want to find, and even print coupons off. Plus, her ebook on how to coupon is an absolute must-read.

Frugal RI Mama: A great resource for free items, couponing, etc. I also like that she is more local to me, so the deals that she posts apply to my area as well. This week she has a HOT deal posted about how to get an eco bag and free gift for $0.45.

Making Life Sweet, One Deal At A Time: Another great blog on couponing and deals. She also has a lot of information on how to build up a stockpile.

Money Saving Mom: great for local deals, coupons, and freebies.

Surviving The Stores: has great information on freebies, CVS and Walgreen Deals, and coupons, of course!

Be Cents Able: A great resource for living frugally, matching coupons to store deals, and couponing.

Those are my favorite resources for couponing and learning about deals. Do you have a favorite website that you refer to when living frugally? I'd love to see some links!

Grocery deals:

Not too many deals this week. Price Chopper had their garlic on sale, and I also picked up two box of Near East couscous that was on sale to try out. It didn't seem to have any harmful additives and I've been wanting to try couscous for a while. Total spent at PC: $4.50

Big Y had more on sale this week, and they were tripling coupons with a face value up to $0.99. Sadly, most of my coupons are a dollar off or more, but I did have two Heinz Vinegar coupons for $0.50 off, and since I use Vinegar for cleaning and washing laundry, I wanted to stock up. They also had President Feta Cheese on sale for $3.99 (I pay $4.18 at WalMart), 1lb carrots for 2/$1, and Big Y Lite Syrup, BIGIF. Total cost before coupons and discounts: $18.63. Total OOP: $9.66, so I saved about 50%.

This week I wanted to buy a drying rack to cut down on energy costs, and the Knight wanted to make tacos, and so I had to pick up vegetarian hamburger for that (which is expensive!) so I spent $89 total this week, more than the past two weeks but still $11 under budget.

Did you find any great deals this week? Link to your post and share how you've been saving big bucks! You must link to the direct post, and not just your homepage.
