Again On Car Seat Safety.

I know that I have posted on car seat safety a number of times, including on the importance of a five point harness and on extended rear facing. Carolyn at Dakota's Natural Blog brought this great video to my attention, which stresses the importance of extended rear facing. Feel free to share the video with other mamas!

More on Car Seat Safety

You remember I posted before about the importance of a five point harness in carseats.

Now for some more very important and shocking news. Recently Consumer Reports issued a report that out of the 12 infant car seats they tested, only 1o passed. 10. out of 12. That is shocking and scary. Not only that, but one seat, the Evenflo Discovery, did not even meet federal safety standards. Keep an eye out for a recall soon. The only two seats that performed well were the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS.

And of course, no car seat is safe if it is installed incorrectly or not used according to the manual. Again, there is a lot of information about the safety of extended rear-facing, matching a car seat to your car, and how to find a certified technition to show you how to install your seat correctly. Remember, you should always try out the car seat in your car before you purchase it, most stores will allow you to do so. Please, take all measures to ensure that your children are safe in the car!

Car Seat safety continued...

A couple days ago, on the old blog, I wrote a post about the importance of a five point harness and the safety of extended-rear facing that included a heartbreaking video. I just want to add to that idea that no matter how safe your car seat is rated to be, if it is installed incorrectly or if it doesn't fit in your car like it should, it is still unsafe. There are many sites out there that will tell you which car seats are compatible with your car, including this one, CarSeat Compatibility Search. You also want to make sure you have your seat installed by a certified technician, often at your local fire department or police department. When buying a car seat, you should also be sure to try it out in your car before purchasing. Most stores will allow you to try the seat out first. If they don't, take your business to a store that will.
